He is known mainly for The Marvellous Land of Snergs, a children's fantasy novel he wrote as E. Wyke-Smith, whose "snergs" provided inspiration for Tolkien's creation of :// Snergs was his last book. His first, Bill of the Bustingforths () is, like Snergs, a delightful anti-fairy tale. One of his adult novels, The Second Chance (), is science-fiction, concerning an old man rejuvenated to his youth by a drug made from ape glands.
